The Children’s Window

Liturgical South Transept (C. E. Kempe 1919)

The South Transept window is composed of four panels with the theme, Childhood; with the familiar words from St. Mark 10:14 “Suffer the little children to come unto Me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” In the left of these two panels may be seen our Lord blessing a child and in the background three accompanying disciples. In the right hand panel are several mothers with their children. The remaining two panels have as their subject, Mary and the Boy Jesus and her cousin, St. Elizabeth with her son, St. John the Baptist, The unfurled scroll bears the words from Psalm 45:2. “Thou are fairer than the children of men; full of grace are thy lips, because God has blesses thee forever.” In the extreme lower corner, the memorial inscription bears the initials frequently used in the church -- AMDG – Ad Mariorem “But as for me, I will behold thy presence in righteousness; and when I awake up after thy likeness, I shall be satisfied” (Psalm 17:16). Surmounting the four panels is an angel bearing a banner on which is the Sacred Heart.

The Triptych depicting the Madonna and Child, accompanied by the angels, which hangs below the window where the Children’s Altar once stood, was given in memory of the infant son of Mary and John Spargo, the long-time Director of the Bennington Museum and author of the 1934 history of St. Peter’s Church, The Consecrated Century.
