St. Peter's Episcopal Church

Starting next to the Narthex, the First Pair of Windows shows the Annunciation (Heaton, Butler & Bayne). The right hand panel depicts the Virgin Mary with a copy of the Scriptures in her hand and a Dove, representing the Holy Spirit, above her head. Below her are two five-pointed stars, one superimposed upon the other. A five-pointed star is called the “Epiphany Star.” The left hand panel shows the Archangel Gabriel, sometimes called the “Angel of the Annunciation”. In his left hand is a scepter and below him is his other symbol, a lily. Note the rich blues and reds in this window. Also of interest is the fact that the Angel has five fingers plus a thumb! It has been said that since the church can never hope to be perfect, this was done deliberately.

The Annunciation window was give to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Eleanor Abbott Dewey (1889-1905)
