St. Peter's Episcopal Church

The “Te Deum” Window was the first window placed in the church and was in place at the time of the church’s consecration. This window is also known as the “Squires Memorial” and was planned by and given by Laura T. Abbott, Ella Squires, Mary L. Hutchins, Fanny Squires Tibbals, and John Squires and was dedicated in 1909. The window is divided into four panels and beneath each one is a line from the Te Deum Laudemus.

The First Panel on the left, inscribed “The Noble Army Of Martyrs Praise Thee”, shows St. Alban, the first English Martyr, who was the son of a Roman noble and an officer in the Roman Army, who died in Britain in 303 A.D. With him are St. Cecilia, the patron saint of sacred music, who died in Rome in 203 A.D., and St. Stephen, the first Christian Martyr. The child is one of the Holy Innocents, slaughtered by Herod at the birth of Christ.

The Second Panel, inscribed “The Glorious Company Of Apostles Praise Thee” shows three apostles - St. John lifting a chalice, St. Paul with a sword, and St. Peter holding a key.

The Third Panel inscribed “The Goodly Fellowship Of Prophets Praise Thee” depicts the prophets Isaiah and Daniel alongside a bearded King David holding a sword in his splendid red robe.

The Fourth Panel, inscribed “The Holy Church Throughout All The World Doth Acknowledge Thee” shows St. Augustine who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury from 597-604 A.D. along with St. Aidan, founder of the North Umbrian Church who died in 651 A.D., and Archbishop William Laud who was born in 1573 and executed during the English Civil War in 1645.

The Inscription along the bottom of the four panels reads “Make Them To Be Numbered With The Saints In Glory Everlasting”
